What about a GPU, can I thrust transcoding through that for better performance somehow? Should I just look for a shit hot CPU? Is RAM important for this (I don't think so, but you'll know better). I was about to drop a bunch of cash on a NAS upgrade (although Synology has f'ed themselves for this by moving away from Intel CPUs), when I realised I can probably just use a (even ex-lease) desktop to run Plex server with better content delivery, while just using the NAS as the storage to pull from.ĭoes anyone have an recommendations for that sort of set up? My NAS does hardware transcoding with its Intel CPU but it's a celeron and pretty crappy. My primary use of the NAS is Plex, and with a few users in the same building & a couple of external ones it's all starting to crawl a bit. I have a Synology NAS (918+) which I currently use for media storage and running Plex through Docker. Sorry for being one of those people asking a question for a really specific use case, but.
